Galaxy 47 is the umbrella brand under which I manage several unique Etsy shops in the modern craft space, including the primary namesake shop. True to its name, the brand evokes a classic modernity rooted in the awe of the cosmos and its organic and beautiful impulses.
The name is taken from a Jackson Pollock piece entitled Galaxy painted in 1947. The piece is so very different from how I remember it when seen many years ago in New York that I wonder if I misread the exhibit label. I remember it as being quite dark. Dark enough that the sand and gravel incorporated in the painting sparkled ever so slightly in the light of the museum. This subtle sparkle of elements from our Earthly environs felt otherworldly as if from space itself. For the first time, the idea of the tactility of the cosmos was made real to me.
Human advancement, technology, and the tools with which we explore and create can still be beautiful and organic.
